MY DADS THOUGHTS ON THE CHURCH PART-I
The people of that slovenly looking church half- way down the block talk about “putting God first”, but a look inside their church, particularly the basement, tells a different story. A stuffy, damp, moldy odor constitutes the “welcome committee” which greets one when he enters the basement where their Sunday school classes are held. On the wall, nestled in cobwebs, hangs an out-of- date cradle roll. Among the many, many names to be found jotted thereon is that of Johnny Howard-he joined the army last month. Upon entering one of the classrooms, disorder speaks for itself. These people do not love God as much as they say they do; they would never permit their own homes to become so deteriorated. Dusty, faded curtains on the finger-marked windows are flanked by scarred, streaked walls, badly in need of paint. The broken chair in the corner and the dusty furniture seem to say, “They haven’t any system in this place, nor any pride either – to say nothing about love for God.”…… The floor, particularly in the corners, is cluttered with literature, Sunday School papers and 2 or 3 Bibles…………..
