THE PROBLEM OF MYSTERY
As physical beings living in a physical world,- we
tend to shy away from mystery. We don’t want to deal
with anything that is “out there” beyond our
understanding. There is something inside us that
rebels when a person trots out something confusing or
contradictory and tries to justify it with "just trust me,it's
a mystery." Our reason demands more.
On the other hand, we love mystery.
We are drawn to things that are beyond our reach,
outside our easy grasp. Life without mystery and
wonder is a pretty dull existence.
But we will never lack for mystery because we
belong to a God who offers us plenty of it.
"Human salvation demands the divine disclosure of
truths surpassing reason,” …wrote the medieval
philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas.
We need to ban the casual, ambiguous way people
use (and abuse) the word “mystery”.
As we learn to differentiate paradoxes from
contradictions (real or contrived), we should be able to
see more clearly what remains.
What remains is the Truth, breathtaking and mind
bending, wilder and more powerful than we ever
imagined.
Such a Truth, which expands understanding into
awe, transcends simplistic, formulaic answers .As such,
this Truth can touch the deep doubts, the big questions,
and the paralyzing confusion that life presents.
……………….I read this in a great book called,
KNOWING THE UNKNOWABLE GOD………..By
James R Lucas.
As I sat in Denny's coffee shop having coffee
reading this book , tears of gratitude began to fill my
eyes.
My mind leaped to the thought that in some
mysterious way God puts His Spirit in us and faulty
humans as we are , He communicates with
us……Unrighteous as we are, Jesus is made our
righteousness and we are blameless in Him…….The
paradox of Grace has no end.
